Increase Bandwidth By 20%

A nice little tweak for XP-Pro only. M*crosoft reserve 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes (suspect for updates and interrogating your machine etc..)

Here's how to get it back:

Click Start-->Run-->type "gpedit.msc" without the "

This opens the group policy editor. Then go to

Local Computer Policy-->Computer Configuration-->Administrative Templates-->Network-->QOS Packet Scheduler-->Limit Reservable Bandwidth

Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab :

"By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default."

So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO.

This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.

works on XP Pro, 2000 but not on other o/s not tested.

u think this is bad by default 50% of all cpu power for windows vista is turned off by default

edit: btw this works now to change my proxy to use the extra bandwith to dl more rapidshare games

edit2: i dont run vista im just stating a fact i found in some computer magazine

your not makin much sence. i have used/am using vista now and it is no way 50% slower then xp even though it looks a lot better

Vista is definately slower strating up not sure about other processes. Dont work on my computer i have XP home lol. Its probly because im on wireless.

i see what your saying. idle it does use 41% of my ram but only 2% of each of my cores

i just did this on my vista ultimate. i guess its kinda pointless as im pretty sure i dont have a bandwith limiter. just incase anyone wants to know you do the same thing as the xp way

I just checked mine and it does make sense in what ur saying. When i did check mine it was already enabled and at 0%, and i havnt configured it before then :icon_confused:

Limit outstanding packets & Set timer resolution they must be for summat surely

Well it just so happens i was doing networking at uni today. I recon the "limit outstanding packets" is just the amount of time your network will wait for a packet which is missing before replying to the host that you do not have the packet. So if you stick it lower, it should ask for the packet sooner, increasing the speed HOWEVER, it could stick you in a constant loading screen by not giving the packet enough time to get to you.

And timer resolution...well you're on your own with that one mate.

I went all the way to QoS Packet Scheduler and the only folders inside it are:

DSCP value of conforming packets
DSCP value of non-conforming packets
Layer-2 proirity value

Using XP pro SP3...

any ideas why???

I tend to be hesitant to muck around with these sorts of things,

but if it's in a reliable computer magazine, I'll seriously consider it... :)

(Or I can ask my paid Windows newsletter people, and hope they like the question...)
